Cockpit Display of Traffic Information Using GPS
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes the need for, and the development of, an avionics device to provide cockpit display of proximate traffic. The device is targeted at general aviation (GA), and is designed to address the needs of this unique market; namely pilot utility and low cost. Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS) are currently in use by the commercial airlines and are being installed by the commuter airlines, but high cost has virtually excluded their use by GA. This paper describes the requirements for surveillance and collision avoidance equipment in the national airspace system, the current avionics equipage by the U.S. aircraft fleet, and the GA avionics market. The operational and functional requirements for the new general aviation traffic alert system are presented accompanied by design, development, and schedule information. The paper also presents the issues and challenges of designing a system that will satisfy the needs of GA and the TCAS community. This paper contains only the understanding and views of the authors and is not intended to reflect the official position or view of the U.S. Government or Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Flight Tests of a 3-D Perspective-View Glass-Cockpit Display for General Aviation Using GPS
A display that takes advantage of the threedimensional positioning data available from differential GPS has been flight tested on a general aviation aircraft. This glass-cockpit instrument provides a natural, “out the window” view of the world, making the horizon, runway, and desired flight path visible to the pilot in instrument flight conditions. The flight path is depicted as a series of sym...
متن کاملSeparation Maintenance in High-stress Free Flight Using a Time-to-contact-based Cockpit Display of Traffic Information
We evaluated the navigational performance of commercial airline pilots in simulated free flight conditions using two cockpit displays of traffic information (CDTI). One display presented minimal essential navigation information. The other added color-based time-to-contact (Tc), minimum-range, and altitude intent information. New metrics of separation maintenance were developed. Results indicate...

متن کاملDisplay Dimensionality, Conflict Geometry, and Time Pressure Effects on Conflict Detection and Resolution Performance Using Cockpit Displays of Traffic Information
Cockpit displays of traffic information are designed to support pilots’ abilities to perform conflict detection and resolution tasks. Three experiments investigated the effects of display dimensionality, conflict geometry, and time pressure of in-flight conflicts on performance. The results indicated that interactive viewpoints in 2 3–D displays eliminated ambiguity costs, resulting in performa...
